The unified entrance exam for students who wish to enroll in any medical courses, is now linked to Aadhaar card. The 12-digit unique identification (UID) number could serve as the base for NEET as well as other all key examinations such as CAT and NET 2017 onwards.
The plan to link NEET 2017 to Aadhaar is made with an aim for transparent and hassle free process. This could check fraud of identity theft during entrance examinations, by eradicating cases of impersonation.

Aadhaar Card linking for NEET 2017

Candidates will be required to declare their 12-digit UID number while filling up forms for NEET. This will be saved for examination day. Earlier, the verification was made individually and manually by matching face with the admit cards. The entire process can be automated through a biometric attendance system. During the exam, fingerprints of the candidates can be collected and matched with the one stored with the NEET 2017 Aadhar CardAadhaar server.
Officials welcome the change and opportunity to make the exams tech-savvy. “It takes just a few minutes to verify whether he or she is the right candidate or not. It’s easy and safe,” the first official said, adding that the JEE-Main exam is experimenting with Aadhaar along similar lines.
Another parallel being drawn is the organizing authority. Like JEE-Main, both NEET and NET are being conducted by CBSE and replicating the success should not be a problem. Candidates who are still without their Aadhaar card need not fret. The card can be applied for before filling out the forms for examination, in which case the 28-digit Aadhaar registration receipt will be used for validation.

Advantages of Aadhaar Card

Apart from the obvious moral benefits, the step has wide progressive implication as well. Aadhaar is already proposed to serve as medium of reaching people widely. From education perspective, the linkage can also help track the educational progress of candidates and help build the digital academic repository. Furthermore, the 12-digit UID number would play a key role, where employers can verify education credentials of potential candidates to reduce job application frauds.
  • Linking Aadhaar Card with the high-stakes entrance examination has certain benefits. It is sure to reduce malpractices by curbing fake enrolment and impersonation. It’ll bring much-needed transparency in the education system.
However there’s a slight concern over privacy issue but officials play it down. “Aadhaar verification is largely safe. Even, income tax department has been using it for e-verification of tax payers. We believe that will not infringe the privacy of individuals. We all know that Aadhaar is already a law, though some still point to the grey areas of its legal status.” the official said.
There are cases pending in the Supreme Court over validity of Aadhaar being made mandatory for all government schemes and allied services. However, in March, the 12-digit UID number got a statutory status via the Aadhaar Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services Act, 2016.
