How to Build Cabinet Doors

Introduction

Cabinet is common furniture used. In a house the cabinet is used everywhere that is it is used in kitchen, living room, bedrooms etc. some cabinets can be moved as it a standalone furniture, few cabinet are attached to the wall. The cabinets are usually made of wood; in recent times apart from wood other synthetic materials are used to make the cabinets

The cabinets come with drawers and doors. Some just have one or more doors may be with or without locks. The top surface can be used as table or as counter tops in kitchen. In long run of usage of the cabinet there are chances to break the cabinet door.

 In the case of the door breakage we cannot just throw away the good cabinet rather we can fic the door or rebuild the door by our self. Also an unused table can be easily converted into a cabinet by making proper changes to the furniture. Before going to how to make the cabinet doors, let us see what all tools needed to do it.

Tools that are required to make cabinet doors

The necessary tools to build the cabinet doors are:

·         A table saw to cut the wooden sheets

·         Router table

·         Hinges

·         Door knobs

·         Bolts, screws to attach the door to the cabinet

·         Clamps

How to build cabinet doors

To start with constructing the cabinet doors, you need to choose the wooden sheets in matching with the cabinet. Ply wood or medium density fiber board cab be chosen for the doors as these can be easily and quickly made. Choose something that makes your work simpler. Take measurement of the door that needs to attach. On the chosen sheet mark the measurements.

With the marked measurement cut the board perfectly with the saw and router. Fix the door knobs, hinges on the door. Now the door alone is ready.

In case of raised panel door, the tools required are more. Also time taken to build this kind of door is more. But the final output of the door is rewarding one. Start with the taking proper measurements. Make the stiles and rails according to the taken measurements. The vertical stile can be approximately enough wide and the horizontal rail can have a minimum of half inch of inset. Make a dado; this is nothing but a joint that fits another piece of wood. A table saw is enough to make the dado. After making the dado test it if the center wooden board can fit in. if it is tight then the groove of the dado can be widen a bit. If it is too loose then the dado needs to scrap and needs to be done again. The horizontal dado must be a bit different from the vertical ones. As the horizontal stile needs to have a structure called tongue, something like the opposite of groove in the structure wise.

Now cut the center piece with an outset of 1 inch. Totally there must be 5 pieces that needs to be fixed together. Apply glue to the grooves and tongue fit in the all the pieces. Clamp all the sides such that it gets to hold tightly. Let it rest for 30 minutes. Now fix the door knobs and hinges to attach it to the furniture.

To get perfect doors accuracy is important. Hence measuring is foremost important step in building the cabinet doors. As per the required style one can build the doors. Without the router one cannot build the flat or raised panel door as accuracy cannot be achieved.
