West Bengal Assembly Election 2016


The Trinamool Congress (TMC) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced her party's candidate list for the 2016. Confirming that TMC will contest alone in all the 294 seats, she highlighted that number of women candidates has gone up from 31 to 45 and the number of minority candidates has also gone up from 37 to 57.

The Left Front (CPIM, CPI, Forward Bloc, Democratic Socialist Party)  put out its first list of candidates for the coming West Bengal Assembly elections. CPI(M) state secretary, Biman Bose, announced the names of 116 candidates. The list features 68 new faces, 16 women and 25 candidates from minority communities. The CPI(M) is the largest party of West Bengal's Left Front which is an alliance of all left-wing parties. The Left Front has declared its second list of candidates for the six-phase West Bengal Assembly elections. The list names 84 candidates and features 52 new faces.

The Indian National Congress  would contest from about 90 of the total 294 constituencies as part of its understanding with the CPI(M)-led alliance Left Front.

The BJP has released its list of candidates for 287 of the 294 assembly seats of West Bengal. The party has nominated Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's grand-nephew Chandra Kumar Bose as its chief ministerial candidate. Chandra Kumar Bose is set to contest from Bhowanipore constituency. State party chief Dilip Ghosh will contest from Kharagpur Sadar. Former chief of BJP West Bengal unit Rahul Sinha and actor Rupa Ganguly will contest from Jorasanko and Howrah North respectively. Union Minister and CEC secretary J.P. Nadda said that the party has given due representation to all sections of the society in its candidates' list. Meanwhile, Shakeel Ansari, chief of BJP's minority wing, has resigned in protest against the party's decision not to field a single Muslim candidate in the 52 assembly seats announced in the first list.
